LATIN NAME: Melissa officinalis.
SOURCE: Steamed distilled from the flowering herb.
COLOUR: clear pale yellow
ORIGIN: England.
AROMA: Lemon like but with a full grass/earthy note. Has the characteristics of the fresh herb.
QUALITIES: Soothing and uplifting to both mind and body. Gerarde the famous herbalist says that Melissa "maketh the heart merry and joyful and strengthen the vital spirits" Very helpful during times of anxiety or shock. An excellent nerve tonic. Helpful skin care oil especially if oily also helpful in low dilution's for treating eczema, and those prone to allergies. Helpful in regulating the female cycle. Melissa is also known as bee balm due to it being a great favourite of bees.
Although Melissa grows easily the yield of oil from the plant is very small hence its great cost. Beware as much Melissa on the market is adulterated. If used on the skin use in dilution's of 1% or less.
